Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

This course is open to the general public.  Anyone working – or living – in the community will benefit from this activity-based training.  Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to handle mental health crises, which can happen anywhere, at any time.  There are no prerequisites, and no previous experience is necessary.  Join us for this enlightening course that is becoming more and more relevant in our changing world.

This interactive training course utilizes a variety of different activities and modes of learning, including:

  • Scenarios
  • Discussion
  • Video
  • Simulation

Pre-registration is required, register early! Class size is limited
Video/audio taping of courses is prohibited

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the course.  The course fee will be charged if cancellation is made in less than 24 hours.  Registration is transferable to another person.
  • For blended learning courses, $30 is non-refundable for cancellations not rescheduled by the same student. This is due to online course codes assigned specifically to the student.

About the instructor

Karen Lilla, RN, MSN, is the Director of Education at Health Counseling Services. She is a registered nurse, with over a decade of experience in the community health field.  She has taught a variety of courses at HCS to adult learners, including CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration.  An enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, Karen delivers course material in an engaging and approachable way, allowing students to gain confidence in both their knowledge and skills.
