This class will be offered virtually. Registered participants will receive a Zoom link to access the training approximately a week in advance of this training.

This dementia training, Positive Approach to Care, will improve participants’ ability to interact positively and effectively with people experiencing dementia or a related condition. Part 1 and Part 2 will allow participants to continue to build on learned skills but each class is a stand-alone training opportunity so register for one or both!

In Part 2, Seeing GEMS® As More than Just Loss: Progression Patterns , participants will:

  • Discuss normal aging and stages of dementia, and the correlating GEM for each (sapphire, diamond, emerald, amber, ruby, pearl).
  • Use the GEMS™ to facilitate positive, supportive communication between the care giver and the person being cared for.
  • Analyze and respond to unmet needs that lead to distress or challenging behaviors as the disease progresses.
  • Describe effective combinations of multi-modal helping techniques, emphasizing use of preserved abilities.



This course includes:

  • An explanation of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders
  • Strategies to provide assistance with activities of daily living
  • Problem solving approaches for challenging behaviors
  • Practice using communication skills

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the course.  The course fee will be charged if cancellation is made in less than 24 hours.  Registration is transferable to another person.

About the instructor

Karen Lilla, RN, MSN, is the Director of Education at Health Counseling Services. She is a registered nurse, with over a decade of experience in the community health field.  She has taught a variety of courses at HCS to adult learners, including CPR/First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, and Medication Administration.  An enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, Karen delivers course material in an engaging and approachable way, allowing students to gain confidence in both their knowledge and skills.

Continuing Education

Part 2 provides 2.0 clock hours.
