Mental Health First Aid for Older Adults will equip staff with tools to provide high-quality care to older adults who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or who may be experiencing new or worsening mental health symptoms.

Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Participants will learn:

  • The prevalence of mental health problems in older adults and the importance of early intervention
  • Unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adults over the age of 65
  • Interventions to provide initial help
  • How to connect older adults to professional, peer, social and self-help care

This interactive training course utilizes a variety of different activities and modes of learning, including:

  • Role playing
  • Scenarios
  • Discussion
  • Video
  • Simulation

Course Information

Course materials, refreshments and lunch are included in the course fee
Pre-registration is required, register early! Class size is limited
Video/audio taping of courses is prohibited

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the course.  The course fee will be charged if cancellation is made in less than 24 hours.  Registration is transferable to another person.

About the instructor

Karen Lilla, RN, MSN, is the Director of Education at Health Counseling Services. She is a registered nurse, with over a decade of experience in the community health field.  She has taught a variety of courses at HCS to adult learners, including CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration.  An enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, Karen delivers course material in an engaging and approachable way, allowing students to gain confidence in both their knowledge and skills.
